So, I think I did pretty good on my written small animal care final. I am not too worried since I felt pretty confident with it. A lot of it was common sense for a knowledgeable animal lover and owner like myself. The next part of the final is in a few weeks and thats the hands on part where we groom a dog. Thats the part that kind of scares me more. A lot of perfection needed but I am pretty good at bathing, shave downs and rounding feet. Just can be difficult at times because every dog breed gets a different type of grooming and haircut. It can be hard but grooming has an artsy side to it.

Getting the certificate at the end of the year if I pass can give me an advantage over other people who are trying to get the same animal job as I am. Do I plan on being a dog groomer in the future? Not exactly, but it is good to have it as a backup just in case. I mean even some places just need a person to bathe the dogs. I dont plan on becoming a veterinarian either. When I say I want to do something with animals it is pretty interesting how everyone thinks I am going to become a vet. Sorry, no. Too much school and a lot of work.  I plan on getting into pet sitting and maybe some dog training. I am good with animal care and bonding with them. My dream is to open my own Doggie Daycare one day. Also, maybe some unique business to do with dogs. Filled with ideas! I just have to follow and create my path one step at a time.

  1. Anna, your love of animals can indeed become a career for you. I thought you might like to read about the wonderful place two people in California founded, called “The Gentle Barn Foundation” – they followed their dreams and passion, and the result is just wonderful. You can read about their mission, history, the animals, etc. by clicking on the different tabs on their site.

Here’s the website link, I think you will be glad to know about this place:

Maybe there is something similar in your neck of the woods, or perhaps someday you might create your own version of The Gentle Barn! 🙂

  2. Anna, it seems you’ve discovered the ‘truth’ that if you’re doing what you love it isn’t ‘work’. One thing you may want to consider is a mobile pet grooming, bathing, traing, exercising etc. business. All you’d need is a van equipted with your ‘tools’and adverising. I think many people would really appreciate not having to drive their animals to a vet/grooming place. You could also deliver the pets to the vets/groomer to save the owners the time and trouble. Good luck! Sal
